Serissa Bonsai: Japanese Sun Rose Care

Bonsai fans appreciate Serissa bonsai, scientifically known as Serissa foetida, for its delicate foliage and tiny, star-shaped blooms. South-east Asian Serissa bonsai, notably from China and Japan, require specific care to grow.

Serissa bonsai like bright indirect light. Place your bonsai near a window with plenty of indirect sunlight, especially during the hottest hours. Most growth occurs between 65°F and 75°F (18°C and 24°C).

1. Light and Temperature

Correct watering is vital for Serissa bonsai. Water soil evenly but not too much. Check soil regularly and water when top layer feels dry. Dry soil can stress plants and cause leaf loss.

2. Watering

Serissa bonsai thrive best in humidity. A humidity tray with water and pebbles under the bonsai adds humidity. Regular foliage misting maintains humidity.

3. Humidity

Bonsai soil or akadama, pumice, and lava rock improve water drainage and aeration. To promote healthy growth and flowering, fertilise your Serissa bonsai spring to fall with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength every two weeks.

4. Soil and Fertilizer

You must prune and train your Serissa bonsai to keep it in form. Pruning young growth promotes branching and compactness. Do not harm fragile branches when wiring them to construct artistic forms.

5. Trim and Train

Before new growth begins, repot your Serissa bonsai every 2-3 years in early spring. Repotting and root cutting improve soil, nourish roots, and reduce root-bound issues. Cut lengthy or broken roots and repot in well-draining bonsai soil.

6. Repotting

Check bonsai for aphids, spider mites, and scales. Check the leaves and stems for pests and diseases and treat immediately with organic insecticidal soap or neem oil.
