Melomakarona Greek Cookies Recipe

Melomakarona are oval, fluffy Greek cookies with orange and cinnamon flavors, honey syrup, and crushed walnuts. Their irresistibility! This recipe yields 60 cookies that store nicely and may be enjoyed or gifted.

Ingredient

– 1 ½ cups water – 1 cup sugar – 1 orange, zested and cut in half – 1 cinnamon stick – 1 cup honey (I used Greek honey) – 2 cups extra virgin olive oil – ½ cup brandy – ½ cup orange juice – Zest of 1 orange – 1 cup sugar – 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon – ¼ teaspoon nutmeg – 7 ½ cups all purpose flour – 2 teaspoons baking powder – 1 teaspoon baking soda – ¾ cup to 1 cup walnut halves, finely chopped

Make syrup. In a medium saucepan, mix water, sugar, orange, and cinnamon stick. Boil on medium-high for 5 minutes to dissolve sugar. Remove from heat and add honey. Let the syrup cool fully before using it.

Preheat the oven to 350°F.Mix EVOO, brandy, orange juice, zest, 1 cup sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl. Mix.Sift flour, baking powder, and soda in separate dish.

Gradually add ⅓ of the dry flour mixture to the wet olive oil mixture, mixing with a wooden spoon. After adding all the flour, hand-knead the dough until smooth.Wrap two large sheetpans with parchment.

Shape 1 ½ tablespoons of cookie dough into an oval shape with your palms, like an egg. Place somewhat flattened on the prepared sheet pan. Repeat cookie-making until dough is gone. Place cookies on a sheet pan, allowing ½ inch between each.

Place a fork in the middle of each cookie and delicately crosshatch it. The cookies should flatten somewhat in the middle (don't press too hard).

The cookies should be golden but not brown after 20–25 minutes on the middle rack of your hot oven.From the syrup, remove the orange and cinnamon stick.

After removing the cookies from the oven, turn them in the cool syrup for 20–30 seconds (you may need to do this in stages to ensure that all cookies absorb enough syrup).

Remove the cookies from the syrup with a slotted spoon and place them on a tray or serving plate. Sprinkle a good sprinkle of chopped walnuts on each cookie (pat gently to stick).
