Anytime Tzimmes (Sweet Carrot Stew) Recipe

Tzimmes, a traditional Ashkenazi Jewish side dish, is served during Rosh Hashanah and Passover, especially during the former when honey-infused dishes symbolize a sweet new year. 

– 2 tablespoons oil – 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped into ½-inch piece – 2 pounds rainbow carrots, peeled and chopped into ½-inch piece – Salt and pepper, to taste – 3 medium orange – ¾ cup dried cherrie – ¾ cup roughly chopped dried apricot – 4 tablespoons butter, softened – ½ cup honey – 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger – ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon – 2 tablespoons chopped parsley



Moderately heat oil in a large pot. Put in carrots and sweet potatoes. Soften covered over medium heat for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Fully juice 3 oranges. When ready, add a generous amount of salt, pepper, orange juice and zest, cherries, apricots, butter, honey, ginger, and cinnamon to carrot mixture.

Cover and cook 15 minutes over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are tender.

To reduce liquid, uncover and cook for 5 minutes. Serve hot, garnished with parsley.
